Axione (part of the Bouygues Group) is currently looking to recruit a Fibre Installation Engineer to join our wider fibre deployment unit, based out of our Eurocentral office, in Motherwell, Scotland.
Axione is rapidly becoming a key contractor in the UK fibre telecommunications sector, focusing specifically on FTTP/FTTH network infrastructure installation and upgrade projects.
As a result, this role provides an excellent, long term opportunity for someone to further their engineering, customer service and eventually management experience, knowledge and skills, under the guidance of our highly experienced and skilled project management team.
About the job
As part of a wider internal fibre deployment unit, the engineer will primarily be responsible for customer fibre installations to residential and business properties according to the company’s safety and compliance policies. This will involve understanding the job details, surveying the property and the infrastructure to plan the installation, communicating with the subscriber to explain the work required, installing the fibre optic cable to the home/business outdoor and indoor, connecting the electronic equipment within the premise, verifying the working order of the connection and completing an installation report.
As secondary responsibilities, the engineer might get involved in other network maintenance and or deployment activities as part of the wider fibre deployment unit, and as such be involved in surveys, cable installations, fibre splicing, fibre testing, active equipment installation and commissioning.
Responsibilities
- Application of all safety regulations to ensure the safety of all employees and the general public on site;
- Ability to work with a variety of passive materials including splice enclosures, connected block terminals, indoor and outdoor fibre cables, transition boxes, etc…
- Ability to read and interpret all technical documents pertaining to the job;
- Ability to quickly survey the whole cable route, optical route and site to evaluate the components of the job;
- Communicate with subscribers to explain the work required to connect them to the network and any disturbance involved;
- Deploy a fibre optic link from the nearest Distribution Point to the premise under various scenarios: overhead, underground in accordance with PIA regulations or on some occasions over building façade;
- Ability to deploy through vertical risers in MDUs;
- Ability to resolve unexpected problems on site to minimise installation failures and the need to reschedule the installation. This may involve perform limited light civil works on private property;
- Install any required optical fibre components, prepare and splice optical fibres;
- Follow the optical route on the network and perform continuity tests and OTDR tests on fibre;
- Respond to customer faults;
- If not doing customer installations, get involved in maintenance and repair activities, or deployment related activities (e.g. surveys, cable installations, splicing, measurements, OLT installation and commissioning);
- Ensure the Company Health and Safety safe working practices are observed at all times;
- Comply with Company Policies and Procedures.;
- Follow the company's Equalities Policies in relation to other staff, customers and members of the Group, at a level appropriate to the post;
- In addition to the duties and responsibilities listed above, the job holder may be required to perform other duties assigned by their line manager from time to time, outside the normal sphere of work as may be reasonably requested.

- NRSWA street works Operative unit 2 card (signal lighting and guarding)
- SA001 - overhead safety
- SA002 - underground safety
- Openreach overhead, underground and fibre accreditation modules or PIA equivalents:
- S8 - PIA Overhead Cable Installation
- S7 - PIA subducting and cabling installation
- S9 - Pole Stepping
- CSCS Card
- Fibre splicing experience
- OTDR testing experience
- Electrical certification needed to do the OLT Installation
