Deputy Plant Manager

VSL International (UK) are looking to appoint a Deputy Plant Manager to join our project team currently working on HS2, based in West Hyde, Rickmansworth (WD3).
HS2 is currently one of the largest and most challenging transport infrastructure projects in the world and VSL are proud to be involved in two large packages of work.
The scope of VSL's work on the project includes:
Constructing the piled foundations for the Colne Valley viaduct (longest of it's kind in the UK)
Form the retaining structures for four ventilation shafts, plus ground improvement works for the execution of the tunnel cross passages
With a project value of over £160M each, and a duration of over 2 years, this is a great opportunity for someone with the right skill set to join an exciting engineering company, working on a high profile, long term, major project! .
Job Purpose and Scope:
The Deputy Plant Manager will oversee all daily operations of the plant on a major construction project, ensuring policies and procedures are followed.
Key Tasks and Activities:
- Participates in the preparation, organisation, creation, and coordination of the plant teams
- Manages internal transfers and needs.
- Helps in choosing specific technical options, in defining and fine-tuning new plant/equipment and new work techniques.
- Supervises plant foremen on site and checks that attained objectives comply with instructions.
- Directs and leads the plant teams of site(s).
- Commits to the site objective (time schedules, efficiency of production, quality of work, etc.).
- Reads, interprets the general schedule of the site (inspects both financial and technical aspects) and establishes the sub-schedules necessary for the plant teams.
- Checks that scheduling and quality objectives are respected. Helps with the drawing up of the organisation chart.
- Checks the execution of integrated sub-contracted works or those necessary for the structure (on a large especially complex site, or a very large site with a normal level of complexity).
- Establishes the procedures specific to the site.
- Participates in the fine-tuning of detailed technology for complex plant.
- Takes into consideration the constraints of other parties working on the site.
- Analyses and suggests, on an on-going basis, improvement in plant performance.
- Defines the organisation of and the accident prevention resources needed to be used in matters of Health and Safety in compliance with the Safety Management Manual
- Makes sure the measures are respected in the spirit of the document. Organises safety campaigns.
- Makes sure the Special Safety and Health Plans for all outside parties working on site are consistent.
- Participates in start-up/launch meetings.
- Issues the Plant department’s Quality plan and all the associated procedures.
- Participates in drawing up the annual investment plan; at the end of the project, organises the sale of plant, either in-house or outside the company.
- Approves and inspects the maintenance schedules issued by teams and requests that monthly indicators be communicated regarding preventive and corrective maintenance.
Essential and Desirable Criteria:
Essential:
- Minimum of 4 years' experience is required or a graduate with a relevant degree
Desirable:
- Methodical, organized, meticulous, have common sense.
- Good level of expertise regarding construction/building plant/equipment.
- Autonomous manager who has a good network of contacts in the sector.
- Can draft quality documents
